FLARE 2024 Annual Meeting in Rome, Italy

Join us in Rome to explore how Youth Visioning Workshops are empowering young people to shape the future of forest communities.

Indigenous and local peoples are crucial to protecting forests from degradation and deforestation. However, limited local opportunities and urban allure have led to a global trend of youth leaving forest communities, endangering both sustainable forests and forest cultures. To address this challenge, the Future of Forest Work and Communities Working Group was formed in 2015.

A collaborative effort by Pilot Projects Design Collective, University of Saskatchewan, International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI), and Forests & Livelihoods: Assessment, Research, and Engagement (FLARE) created the Youth Visioning Workshops. This participatory methodology engages young people in conversations about their lives, ideas, and visions for the future of forest communities. To date, 18 workshops across 10 countries have generated valuable insights and fostered engagement among participants.

At the upcoming 2024 FLARE Annual Meeting in Rome, Italy, Scott Francisco and Valeria Romano Lara will present this initiative during the Plenary Event on Saturday, October 5. Their presentation will focus on the innovative approach of the Youth Visioning Workshops and their impact on forest communities worldwide.

Following the plenary, FLARE attendees are invited to join a dedicated Community of Practice Building Session. This interactive session will provide in-depth information about two key opportunities:

  1. Workshop Coordinator Intake: Learn about the role of workshop coordinators and how to get involved in organizing future Youth Visioning Workshops.

  2. Community Participation Nominations: Discover the process for nominating forest communities to participate in upcoming workshops, helping to expand the initiative's reach and impact.

The session will also address current challenges facing forest communities and explore potential funding opportunities to support the expansion of the Youth Visioning Workshop program. Attendees will have the chance to engage in discussions about the future of forest work and contribute their insights to this growing community of practice.

By participating in this session, FLARE members can play a crucial role in shaping the future of forest communities and supporting the next generation of forest workers, leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. This is an excellent opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and community partners to collaborate on novel strategies for sustainable forest management and community development.
