With the belief that streets are for more than carrying vehicles in mind, Pilot Projects worked with the Department of Transportation’s Plaza Program to produce a space for pedestrian use. The plaza blends the constitutive elements of the program—street seats, planters and greenery —to create an area that is functional throughout the week but can transform into an outdoor market during summer weekends. As a market, tents will line the sides, acting as a buffer between walkers and drivers and creating a continuous corridor across the two plaza sections. The market will ensure that the construction for Essex crossing does not marginalize the sidewalks of an important intersection for various modes of transit.
