Habitat Bio

The Habitat Bio is a bio-based net zero structure made from sustainable Brazilian conservation timber. This floating moveable hub for systemic collaboration is designed to draw together the shared interests, resources and promote the development of the regional bio-based economy: construction, entrepreneurship, research, collaboration and development.

Accommodating up to 200 people for events, meetings, receptions and panel discussions. The structure will demonstrate the potentials of sustainable timber construction for cities and local communities globally. Led by Pilot Projects Collaborative in partnership with UFOPA, Model Forest Amazonas-Tapajós, Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, Amazonian architects, engineers, foresters, communities, and other national and international organizations.

The Habitat Bio will highlight both mass timber and conservation timber, demonstrating the integration between sustainable construction, urban development, and climate resilience. The structure will feature Brazilian wood from sustainable sources such as local community forests, certified plantation wood, whole-tree columns to minimize waste and reclaimed "circular" wood elements.

The structure will be the host of an ongoing program within the Amazonas-Tapajos Model Forest. Administered by the Federal University of Western Para, it will serve as a permanent research and outreach station. Located in the state of Pará, the Model Forest encompasses a diverse mosaic of public, private, Indigenous, and federal lands, including over 100 Indigenous communities and other traditional Amazonian peoples within its 4.000.000 hectares.

Global leaders, experts and practitioners will convene to share knowledge and shape the future of sustainable urban construction and forest stewardship. Foresters, architects, industry leaders, conservation specialists, and government officials will make up panel discussions, presentations, and round tables. The three floors of the Habitat Bio were designed as a platform for collaboration, education, and discussions on sustainable development and biomaterials. Through its diverse range of activities, it will promote dialogue, knowledge exchange and actionable commitments to environmental sustainability and urban resilience.

COP30 in Belém, Brazil

Presented at COP30 with multi stakeholders, the Habitat Bio is responding to the global discussions on innovate solutions and climate resilience.

For the first time, the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties on climate will occur in the Amazon biome, hosted by the city of Belém in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Amazon, characterized by its global significance for climate change mitigation, represents the complex reality of international discussions and commitments on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. This event will be a milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol, the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and being the first COP held in the Amazon. COP30 comes after the announcement of 2024 as the hottest year on record, with temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, highlighting the urgency of climate change. The event will be a central point to discuss global collaboration in mitigating the climate crisis, reinforcing the need for urgent action.
